Born and raised in Lübeck and the daughter of a ship's captain, Birgit von Heintze spent a good part of her childhood seeing the world from her father's vessels.

After graduating from school, she first spent a year in Paris, then worked the next two years as a flight attendant on Lufthansa's international routes, before arriving in Hamburg to study German language and literature. After training as a journalist at the Axel-Springer-School of Journalism in Hamburg, Birgit von Heintze worked for the BILD newspaper as chief reporter in Berlin before making the move to television as an editor for Premiere and for Thomas Gottschalk's' late night show (RTL) in Munich.

As an editorial director and TV host, Heintze hosted her own daily television show ("Life Guide") on the German Kabelkanal. She also wrote about lifestyle and culture topics for newspapers and magazines such as Gala, GQ, and Welt am Sonntag. In 1997, Heintze started her own company for interior design. She opened a showroom in Berlin and has been an interior designer for both private and commercial spaces ever since. Birgit von Heintze lives with her family in a country home by Großensee in Hamburg, and also in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin.
